Without getting too specific, the more cores a processor has, the more efficient it is.

So, at the very least, you should choose a computer with a dual-core processor with speeds of 2.5 GHz if you want your software to run smoothly.

RAM stands for “Random Access Memory” (does that remind you of a certain Daft Punk album?) It is also referred to simply as “Memory”.
The RAM is a form of temporary computer storage or your computer’s “short-term memory,” if you will.
This is different to your hard drive, which holds most of the archive memory in your computer or “long term memory.”
The reason the RAM is so crucial is because it determines how fast your computer can carry out tasks and run a program.
This is because it temporarily stores the code required to run a program.
So, in regards to your production, you should get a RAM strong enough to run multiple music programs and applications at once.
And since RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB), we recommend you get a computer that has at least 8GB of RAM.

They include: software, project files, samples, and much more.
Because you need so many files, storage space can become a huge issue.
That’s why we recommend opting for a laptop with 1TB of storage. If you choose to get this much storage you won’t run out of space for quite awhile.
If this isn’t possible, try to go for a minimum of 500GB. This should be plenty of space for what you need.
Don’t stress about hard disk space too much though. You can easily add storage to most laptops or utilize external hard drives. It’s also relatively cheap to add storage and something many producers do.

The easiest way to do this by looking up videos of the processor doing actual music production on Youtube. For example, you can search, “Core i7 7700k music production” to see the processor doing what you want to use it for!
Think of this as like a “test drive”.
You can also search up the name of the laptop and see what other music producers are saying about it on the internet.

The RAM
RAM stands for “Random Access Memory” (does that remind you of a certain Daft Punk album?) It is also referred to simply as “Memory”.
The RAM is a form of temporary computer storage or your computer’s “short-term memory,” if you will.
This is different to your hard drive, which holds most of the archive memory in your computer or “long term memory.”
The reason the RAM is so crucial is because it determines how fast your computer can carry out tasks and run a program.
This is because it temporarily stores the code required to run a program.
So, in regards to your production, you should get a RAM strong enough to run multiple music programs and applications at once.
And since RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB), we recommend you get a computer that has at least 8GB of RAM.
With this, you should be able to use most, if not all of your production programs without a problem.

Hard Drive
If you’ve put any time into music production, you know that there’s a million different types of files involved.
They include: software, project files, samples, and much more.
Because you need so many files, storage space can become a huge issue.
That’s why we recommend opting for a laptop with 1TB of storage. If you choose to get this much storage you won’t run out of space for quite awhile.
If this isn’t possible, try to go for a minimum of 500GB. This should be plenty of space for what you need.
Don’t stress about hard disk space too much though. You can easily add storage to most laptops or utilize external hard drives. It’s also relatively cheap to add storage and something many producers do.
After you figure out the amount of storage you want, you should then pick between the two types of hard drives depending on your budget.
The two to consider are Hard Disk Drives (HDD) and Solid State Drives (SSD).
For music production, it doesn’t make a huge difference whether you use a HDD or SSD if you aren’t using any heavy multi-sampled libraries such as Kontakt.
But the benefit you get from using an SSD is the speed at which your computer pulls information from the drive. This means shorter load times for you!
The only downside is SSDs are more expensive. And sometimes having a SSD doesn’t make a big enough difference in your production to justify the price.

Even though the RAM, Hard Drive, and CPU are the most important things to consider, there are also a few other factors you might want to take into account:
- Does it have a good trackpad? If you plan on spending hours inside your DAW and don’t plan on using a mouse, this can be important for your comfort.
- What kind of display/display adapters does it have? Will you be plugging into a monitor or using the laptop's screen?
- Which operating system do you prefer? This will help you easily decide whether you want a mac or a windows computer, as these are the two main operating systems that are supported by nearly every music software.
- Check out consumer reviews of the models before purchasing. See if the laptop has any common issues to save yourself a headache.

Keeping these factors, your own priorities, and the information above all in mind when you go to find a new laptop can be a bit much.
